Genre: Fiction/Fantasy/Superhero universe

Once in a while a comic-book storyline comes along and blows away the readers with its fantastic story and strong characterisation handled by equally sublime writers. The Death of Superman in the early 90s is one example of epic comic-book tales with Roger Stern penning the novel based on the series. Another story has emerged in recent years and that is Infinite Crisis, sequel to Crisis On Infinite Earths (published in the mid 1980s), and who better to write the novel than New York Times bestseller, Greg Cox.

Dark days have fallen upon the heroes of the DC universe. Powerful villains and arch nemeses have broken free from Arkham Asylum and other prisons and lay siege to various countries around Earth, causing chaos and leaving a bloody trail of destruction in their wake. These heinous crimes are not just confined to Earth, but into the farther reaches of space. To add to this terrible crisis, Earth’s greatest heroes and the three founders of the Justice League of America: Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, have now gone their separate ways after a bitter argument with each other. From afar, a sinister force watches the turmoil unfold before his eyes as it’s part of a diabolical plan that will change the world as we know it, forever. With the founders of the JLA divided and the rest of the League occupied in saving a world that seems all but doomed, is there anyone to stand in the way of this madman achieving his goal?

I remember reading The Death of Superman series back in ’93 and I was totally blown away by it. Here we had, without doubt, the most iconic superhero of all time and a being who we all thought was invincible, been beaten to death by a creature from space known as Doomsday.
